CAUSES OF ED YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT

With ED, we often talk about high blood pressure, heart disease and anxiety. But how do they actually cause ED? And are there any other watch-outs you need to know about?

  • Medicines - Certain antidepressants, blood pressure medications, pain relievers, antihistamines and even some over the counter medications for allergies or colds can cause you to droop.1 That said, if you have certain health issues that require medication you should always follow the advice of your health care professional. Just keep an eye on the end goal – becoming healthier in general may result in less reliance on erection-killing medicines in the first place.
  • Flick the fat  - Being overweight leads to higher levels of harmful visceral fat which is linked to lower testosterone levels and inflammation, both of which can cause erection difficulties.2 You know what to do with this one.
  • Sleep it off – Lack of sleep affects testosterone levels which may have an effect on your erection. Aim for seven to nine hours of shut-eye each night.3,4
  • Brush up your pearly whites – Tests are ongoing with this one, but it’s suspected that gum disease and serious health issues like heart disease are related, the latter notorious for causing erection difficulties. It could be that poor oral health causes your immune system to attack pathogens in the mouth, the bacteria then gets into your bloodstream damaging blood vessels and blood flow.5  And when you’ve got ED, you’ll know that less blood flow is not a good thing.
  • Avoid the ‘bit on-the-side’ – Being unfaithful can lead to a crushing feeling of guilt, which can turn to anxiety. Chemical changes in the brain can result putting the nervous system into ‘overdrive’ - a prolonged state of fight or flight.6 It might become difficult to calm down enough to get aroused. Our view? Fidelity’s a personal thing and we’re not in a position to judge. What we can say is that an erection might not be the only thing you lose if you decide monogamy’s not your thing…….especially if you get caught.
